On Saturday, June 8th, Metallica took their European WorldWired trek to Slane Castle in Meath, Ireland, and amid their epic 18-song set, the thrash legends played their version of “Whiskey in the Jar,” which, of course, appears on the band’s 1998’s covers album Garage, Inc. Metallica dedicated the performance to Phil Lynott, the late frontman of Irish hard-rock/proto-metal pioneers Thin Lizzy. The song is a traditional Irish tune that was popularized by Thin Lizzy when they covered it in 1973.

“We love you Phil. Thank you,” Metallica’s James Hetfield said at the end of the performance. After the show, Hetfield also posted to Instagram a photo of himself kissing the statue of Lynott on Harry Street in Dublin. “Much respect and love to my favorite songwriter, Mr. Phil Lynott,” Papa Het wrote in the caption.

Metallica’s current European WorldWired run is set to conclude on August 25th in Mannheim, Germany. For more info, including a full list of dates, visit Metallica.com, and scroll onward for the full set list from the band’s Slane Castle show.
