Songs to Live By: Psycroptic’s Todd Stern

Psycroptic, 2019

Australian technical death-metal crew Psycroptic have been shredding out forward-thinking extreme music for the past 20 years and they’re still going strong. The band has a slew of dates lined up for 2019, including the U.S. tour with Cannabis Corpse and Gorod, in support of its stellar seventh album, As the Kingdom Drowns, released late last year via Prosthetic Records. Ahead of those shows, we talked to the group’s bassist and newest member Todd Stern to find out what music he listens to for every mood. Read on to find out the songs that the bass player turns to when shaking off the morning grogginess, looking for a pick-me-up and more.

WHEN I’M PISSED OFF:
HATEBREED – “AFFLICTED PAST”

I mean … come on.

WHEN I’M FEELING DEPRESSED:
AVENGED SEVENFOLD – “I WON’T SEE YOU TONIGHT PT.1”

Hate all you want, this song is an absolute masterpiece. Hair-raising.

WHEN I GET UP IN THE MORNING:
THE HOWARD STERN SHOW

I prefer to wake up to The Howard Stern Show if and whenever possible. For a long time, though, when I was young, “Suffer in Truth” by Meshuggah was the morning jam.

WHEN I GO TO BED:
ANYTHING BY ANAL CUNT

[Laughs] To be honest, I’m more into falling asleep to something on Netflix as opposed to music.

WHEN I’M HUNGOVER:
DEICIDE – WHEN SATAN LIVES

Favorite live album of all time. It’s also laugh-out-loud funny, especially if you’re hungover. Winds of Creation by Decapitated comes in close second.

WHEN I’M GETTING IT ON:

Oooh, that varies GREATLY. Let’s face it, your partner has to be into it, too. My chick and I always end up listening to something sexy like Marvin Gaye, Al Green or Seal if I’m controlling the tunes. Those are for love-making, though. If you’re just straight-up fucking and being real animalistic, I’d say it could be anything from Ghostface to Guns N’ Roses.

SONG I MOST WANT TO BE REMEMBERED FOR:
ABACINATE – “NEGATING THE OMNIPOTENCE OF YOUR SO CALLED MAN IN THE SKY

A really close friend [Justin Spaeth, Tombs] and I wrote this song in 2007, not thinking much of it. The lyrics came together and basically it’s about how corrupt religion is. The fact of the matter is, very few people have ever heard this song, but for some reason I’m extremely proud of how it turned out. It does a great job of destroying the church in just over three minutes.

SONG I WISH I WROTE:
SOUNDGARDEN – “BURDEN IN MY HAND”

I don’t know if a song could be more perfect. Have a listen.

SONG I WANT PLAYED AT MY FUNERAL:
STEVIE RAY VAUGHN – “LIFE BY THE DROP”

It has a very sad, morose vibe, but also gives you a reason to rejoice. Every thing you’d need in a funeral song.
